On May 13, 1946, Charles V. Harker (1918-1995) founded Mid-States Concrete Products Co. Today, the business, now going by Mid-States Concrete Industries, is led by Charles’ son Charles H. Harker as CEO and his grandson C. Hagen Harker as president.
The company, which employs about 210 people, manufactures Wall Panels, CarbonCast Insulated Wall Panels, Hollowcore, Beams, Columns and Balconies. Mid-States offers a variety of architectural finishes, as well as custom precast elements. Territory includes Southern Wisconsin, Northern Illinois and Eastern Iowa.
Originally produced in 1938, hollowcore provided both a practical and economical floor and roof solution. Charles V. Harker first gained experience in the industry working for the Illinois-Wisconsin Concrete Pipe Company in South Beloit, Illinois. He helped set-up and supervise the hollowcore operation. But, when WWII began, Charles enlisted in the Army. After the war, Charles returned to South Beloit and learned his previous employer had ended its hollowcore production. With help and encouragement from the right people, Charles started Mid-States Concrete Products Co.
Although Mid-States began with production of hollowcore, the product line has expanded over the years. In 1955, Mid-States began producing 8” x 16” hollowcore. Wall panels went in to production in 1960 and in 1965 Mid-States evolved its hollowcore offerings to provide an 8” x 24” hollowcore. In 1986, beams and columns were added to the product line.
By 2000, Mid-States had modified its hollowcore again and began producing an 8” x 48” hollowcore. In January 2007, the company rebranded under the name Mid-States Concrete Industries and in 2013 Mid-States joined the AltusGroup and began offering CarbonCast insulated wall panels.
Over the years, Mid-States has helped ensure its projects come in on-time, on-budget and on-target, utilizing the Face-to-Face Solution™. It includes a project assessment and planning, project strategy, single source installation and completion confirmation. Learn more >>
